Edward BAYLY
Adjoining Tasman Park to the east was 'Claylands'. Edward Bayly (1849-1917) had bought his 640 acres (Portion 65) at the same time as Cyril BLACKET and would go into partnership with Cyril in several business ventures. Bayly had been born in Weymouth, Dorset in October 1849. His father (also Edward 1811-1905) became the Bank Manager in the town and built a respectable house which he called 'Claylands'. After schooling, Edward junior trained as a Merchant Seaman and became a Second Mate in 1871, a First Mate in 1874 and a Master Mariner in 1877. He came to Sydney from London on the ship 'Hawkesbury' every year from 1872 to 1875 rising from third Mate to first. Hawkesbury was a composite full-rigged ship of wood and metal built in 1868, weighing 1,120 tons with a length of 62m and 11m wide.
About 1885, Edward Bayly rented a scow (a flat bottomed boat) to bring Cyril's furniture from Sydney to Tasman Park, but they got stuck at Sussex Inlet after not timing the tide correctly. In 1886, Blacket and Bayly purchased and advertised the steamer 'Pioneer' for carrying cargo from Pyrmont, in Sydney, to Tasman Park and ports in between. It appears Blacket and Bayly were hoping to harvest the area's natural resource, timber, and ship it to Sydney.
It appears that through misfortune Blacket and Bayly's timber venture was not a success and they sold the business to Alexander MATHIE I and Joseph SUFFOLK in early 1887. As a later correspondent to the Shoalhaven Telegraph pondered in 1888; "... It is needless here, as indeed it would be impossible to convey to the reader an adequate idea of the losses, difficulties, and annoyances which beset Messrs. Blacket and Bayly in starting the log-timber export trade at St. George's Basin...”
Edward Bayly, whether because of failure of the business or because of his ailing father at Claylands in Weymouth, decided to return to the home country. An advertisement in Oct 1890 stated; "Miller, Roberts and Co. Having received instructions from Captain Bayly who is leaving for England almost immediately, to hold a Clearing Out Sale on Fri Oct 17 1890 at 11 am. Free coaches will leave Nowra at 8.30 am. Free lunch provided on the ground. A number of owners on adjoining properties, such as Messrs. Bryce, Suffolk, Parnell, Blacket, Barham, and others will take this opportunity of offering cattle and horses. The auctioneers draw special attention to this Sale, which is being extensively worked up, and which they intend to make memorable in the district and, probably, the largest ever held. Friday, October 17th, 1890, At 11 am."
Edward Bayly did return to his father's house, Claylands, in Weymouth and then returned to Sydney, probably after 1905 when his father died aged 94. Most of Edward's siblings had died before Edward senior and the probate realised a substantial sum of £44,486, of which Edward junior probably had a half share. In 1907, Edward Bayly 57, married Mary Louise Woolcott 42, in Sydney. This was not the end of Blacket and Bayly's partnership. In 1910 they, among other investors, purchased the south coast transport business of Schilling & McTernan, plus other mail contracting services down the coast. Two years later Blacket & Son were awarding a contract for erecting a Billiard Room for Edward Bayly, probably in Neutral Bay.
Edward Bayly sold his 640 acres, Claylands, on the northern shore of St Georges Basin in 1915. However, the new purchaser, Albert Jackson, a Sydney estate agent, had difficulty in meeting the mortgage to the lender, Edward Bayly. Lots were offered for sale from a quarter to one acre from 'Claylands Estate', offering fine fishing and shooting, waterfront frontages, close to the proposed federal port and 'about 2½ miles from the site of the proposed Railway station at Tomerong'. The mortgage was foreclosed in 1916 and the land passed to his wife, Mary Bayly, the following year as Edward Bayly died at their home in Neutral Bay, Sydney in 1917. He had called their home 'Claylands'. [1]
