Herbert MONAHAN
Herbert Monahan (1884-1936, not Monaghan) was from Oranmeir, south west of Braidwood, where his Irish parents made their home. He married Alice Gardner at Gulgong in 1911 and after she died in 1920, he married Agnes Jean Moore at West Wyalong four years later. They were living at Queanbeyan in 1935. It is believed Bert built the Tomerong Butchers shop for Jim Tyrrell that used to be just north of the Pine Forest Road junction on Hawken Road. It was reported in 1936; "On Tuesday last Mr. Herbert Monahan, a sleeper cutter, who has been resident in this district some seven or eight years, met a sad ending in the bush about eight miles distant from Tomerong. He was engaged felling a large green tree, about 1 ft. 6in. through, and in its descent struck a large dead tree which snapped off at about a height of 5ft. It appears that he hurried to the south of the tree that he was engaged in felling when it struck the dead tree — located in the direction that the unfortunate man had thought to take refuge and crushed him (Monahan) so badly that death must have been almost instantaneous. Other men, working some distance away heard the tree falling, and when they ceased work about 5 o'clock p.m., one of the number, a young man named (Albert) Wrightson, strangely enough, thought to make in the direction where they had heard the noise of the falling timber, and, needless to say, was shocked to find that the unfortunate man had been killed outright. The deceased, who was a married man, leaves a wife and four children, resident at Queanbeyan. Prior to the depression he (the deceased) was a master builder." Herbert is buried in the Anglican Portion of Nowra General Cemetery however no headstone has been found. [1]
