Malcolm MATHIE I
Malcolm MATHIE (Abt.1812-1888) was born in Bathgate, Whitburn, Scotland to William Mathie and Margaret Graham. He married Ann BRYCE (abt.1813-1866) at Whitburn in 1834. Ann was the daughter of Alexander Bryce I and Marion Russell and the sister of William BRYCE I and Alexander BRYCE II. Malcolm Mathie arrived in NSW on the 'Conway' in early 1857 (or late 1856) with his wife and six children.[1]
William and Alexander Bryce had arrived in NSW five years earlier, where they settled with their Uncle, Ebenezer Russell at Croom (now Croome) between Albion Park and Dunmore. The Mathies and Bryces had engaged in farming pursuits in Scotland. The Bryce brothers purchased Erowal Farm in 1854, and it appears the Mathies went straight to Erowal on arrival. Malcolm purchased Portion 102 of 40 acres, which adjoined Erowal, in 1863 where they farmed and called the property 'Tippet Hill', after a farm/hill near his Scottish village. He was a signatory to Petitions to establish a Post Office at Tomerong and became a guarantor for the Postmaster. He chaired the meeting calling for the establishment of a School in Tomerong in 1862, was a player in the 'Tomerong Church Dispute' of 1879 which focussed on the alleged singing of 'bawdy' songs in the building, and laid the foundation stone for the new Union Church in 1886.[2]
When the Bryce brothers formally subdivided their land into Cockrow and Erowal in 1886 Malcolm received 426 acres which was to the north of Cockrow and adjoined 'Tippet Hill'. He also conditionally purchased 300 acres (Portion 85) at Basin View on which a sawmill would later be established by his Grandsons. A directory in 1885 listed Malcolm as having 430 acres with 4 horses and 50 cattle.[3]
After Malcolm died in 1888, their first born, William MATHIE II became the Administrator and 'Tippet Hill' was sold to William's brother-in-law James HENRY who had married Ann MATHIE at Tomerong in 1878. Malcolm was reportedly buried at 'Tippet Hill' with his wife and daughter and were apparently reburied in the Nowra Cemetery with the headstone relocated by William BRAITHWAITE. [4]
