Oswald Gordon Young 1895-1968

Oswald Gordon YOUNG (1895-1968) was born at Yalwal to James Young and Catherine Lucy. James had a slaughtering license for Tomerong and he, or his son, was operating the Butchers at Tomerong in 1914. Oswald, aged 19, enlisted on the same day as Edward Charles WATT at Warwick Farm so we can assume they were probably friends. Oswald, however, joined the 1st Light Horse Regiment whilst Charlie would join the 6th. In August 1915 Os and Charlie were given a send off in the village chaired by William George LACKERSTEEN. Os embarked on HMAT ‘Mashobra’ on 4 October 1915 with reinforcements for the 1st Light Horse Regiment.

Oswald Gordon Young, as part of ‘C’ Squadron of the 1st Brigade of the Anzac Mounted Division, followed a similar path during the war as Stirling Fritz BLACKET and Edward Charles WATT. His Regiment was employed in extending the railway across the Sinai Peninsula to support the allied advance in the northern summer of 1917. He embarked in Kantara on HT ‘Ulimaroa’ on 13 March 1919 arriving in Australia the following month.

It is believed he returned to his father’s home at Glebe, not to Tomerong, and was discharged on 16 June 1919. Oswald applied for, and was granted, a soldier settlement farm near Griffith in September of 1920. It is likely that he knew Francis and Marguerite Ferguson from their Tomerong days. Oswald's farm was half way between the Ferguson farm, at Yenda, and the main town of Griffith. His 43 acres was in Beelbangera, only 600m east of the main irrigation canal and a little further to the train station (Farm 600M, portion 352). Oswald married Alice Chapman, from Kalgoorlie, in Junee in 1921. Unlike Marguerite and Francis Arthur FERGUSON Oswald left his farm in 1928, just before the Great Depression, and went to work for the Griffith Producers Co-operative where he retired as the Yard Foreman over 25 years later. In 1960 Oswald, living in Griffith, requested a replacement for his Active Service Badge and Discharge Certificate as they had been destroyed when his house was razed in August 1927. He died on 8 October 1968 aged 72 in Griffith. Oswald is commemorated on the Shoalhaven Memorial Gates (O Young) and the Griffith Cenotaph (O G Young). [1]
