Pendrill Cyril BLACKET
Pendrill Cyril BLACKET (1885-1958) was the son of Cyril BLACKET and Christian (nee Home). Cyril was, later, a local architect, entrepreneur and a member of the Clyde Shire Council. Pendrill was born in Casula, and was named after one of his father's schoolmaster's from Glebe Point School. He became a partner in his father's Sydney architectural business in 1911, aged 26. In 1912 he produced a document on Silhouettism, titled 'How to Produce Real Portraits of Yourself, Your Friends and Other Objects'. In 1914 Pendrill sailed for London on the 'Otranto'. The Sydney Morning Herald reported in late 1914 "...40,000 out of 170,000 colliers employed in Northumberland and Durham had enlisted. The 14th Durham Light Infantry is said to be mainly composed of those colliers. Mr. Pendrill C. Blacket, architect, of Sydney, holds a commission as first lieutenant in this regiment."
Pendrill's younger brother, Stirling Fritz BLACKET, joined the AIF Mounted Division, 2nd Light Horse. Captain Pendrill Blacket was seriously wounded on 1st Oct 1915 at Loos in France and spent time at a Red Cross Hospital in Chichester Terrace, Brighton. The Battle of Loos (near Lille in northern France) was the first major British offensive on the Western Front and resulted in a defeat for the British. After the war Pendrill was attached to Randwick Hospital in Sydney in 1919 and, together with others, was using his artistic skills to illustrate a Diggers Magazine to raise funds for those injured in the war. Pendrill received the British War, Victory and medals and the 1915 Star.
Alice Bryda Riley (1885-1989) had been born in Bowral and this is where she married Pendrill in 1920. She was the daughter of Valentine and Alice Riley (nee Gerard). Pendrill also practiced as a silhouette artist around this time. In 1922 they were living on the Tasman Park Estate at St Georges Basin, part of Pendrill's fathers land developments. Their home was called Midgiegong, where their daughter was born two years later (Judith?). Arnold had been born in 1921 and Richard would be born in 1930. In 1925 Pendrill, whilst at Tasman Park, became the President of the NSW Apiarists Association and they held their three day annual conference at the Nowra School of Arts where, like his father, Pendrill urged the development of Jervis Bay and its minerals. A similar conference took place the following year at Cootamundra. Pendrill described himself as a Manager on the electoral rolls at this time.
In early 1926 Tasman Park House was destroyed by a bushfire. Cyril was away, but Pendrill and his family witnessed the event. The Blacket family lost a piano, plus all of the furniture, outhouses and a motor car. Some locals sheltered in the waters of the Basin with one driving a truck into the water to save it. Whilst Cyril moved to Nowra, Pendrill and family moved to Maitland in the Hunter (103 Regent Street, West Maitland). Pendrill described himself as a journalist and became the Chairman of the 'All for Australia League' in 1931. This was a right wing anti-establishment political movement that was active for a short time in the depression years. Alice became Vice-President of the Maitland Branch of the Country Women's Association.
The family moved again to make their home at Bowral, where Alice had been born, in 1934. Pendrill would practice architecture. Whilst at Bowral he became the Secretary of their Militia Welfare Association and then stood for election as an Alderman in the 1937 Bowral Municipal Elections. He stood again in 1941 and was elected and served at least seventeen years on the Council. He returned to architectural practice and in 1944 he was the Vice President of the District Council of Boy Scouts. The following year he was the President of the Bowral RSL Sub-branch and organised aid for returning soldiers from WW2. In 1953 they lived at 'Eldon' at 42 Bendooley Street, Bowral. Whilst Pendrill died in 1958, aged 73, Alice would live to 104 years dying in 1989. [1]
