Richard Frederick Mott Burkinshaw 1894-1959

Richard Frederick Mott BURKINSHAW (1894-1959, known as Fred) was the son of Frederick BURKINSHAW and Catherine ANDREWS. He was born in Tomerong probably at the home of his Grandparents; James ANDREWS and Catherine WHITE. He was born shortly after his family had moved to Moruya from Milton. By about 1902 his family had moved to near Dunedoo in the Riverina. Richard was the son of Frederick and Catherine (nee Andrews - the Tomerong family after whom Andrews Road is named). By 1907 they were at Cobbora, north east of Dubbo where, at age 13, Richard was the first on the scene of a tragic suicide. His father, Frederick, had operated the Royal Hotel at Cobbora and in 1910 had built and opened a Hotel at nearby Dunedoo and other public houses in the district. On enlisting, eight years later, Richard was single and employed as a barman at Dunedoo. His next of kin was his father who was the publican of the Railway Hotel at Merrygoen near Dunedoo and he also owned a sawmill there. In April 1916 Richard left Australia via Alexandria arriving at Plymouth in June. He moved to France in September joining the 19th Battalion. He was invalided to England in January 1917 with trench feet but rejoined his unit in July. On 9 October 1917, whilst west of Ypres, Belgium, near Broodseinde, he was wounded with a gunshot wound to the face in the Battle of Poelcapelle and returned to England. He was back at his unit in France in May 1918, before transferring to the 20th Battalion in October - one month before the war was to end. Four days before leaving England he married Edith Rosetta TAYLOR in London, in September 1919, and arrived in Sydney in October before discharging in December. By 1927 he was at Lismore as a member of the 15th Light Horse, but in July 1933 it was reported that he had left the Regiment to pursue a civil occupation at Merrygoen. The licence of his father’s old hotel at Merrygoen was transferred to Richard that same year and by 1939 he was a Hotel Broker and Valuator operating from Sydney. This continued until at least 1948, operating from his South Bondi home overlooking the ocean. Richards father, Frederick, died at Woonona in 1941 and his wife, Edith, in 1951. Richard died on 13 July 1959 aged 65 at Bondi. [1]
