Robert KELLS
Robert Kells was born in County Cavan, Ireland in 1831 and, aged 11, arrived in the Colony as an assisted immigrant with his parents Richard and Elizabeth (nee Carr), and sister Jane aged 9, aboard the Sir Charles Napier. They settled and farmed at Longreach, west of Nowra, on the Shoalhaven River. Robert purchased Portions 80 and 82 (46 and 35 acres) in 1852-53 and it appears his parents, Richard and Elizabeth, lived with them on the property. At Bolong near Nowra in 1858, Robert married Ellen BARTON. Ellen's brother William BARTON arrived in the Colony, with sponsorship from Robert Kells, aboard the 'Abyssinia' in 1859 listing his occupation as a 24 year old Farm Labourer from Fermanagh. Robert and Ellen had eight children between 1859 and 1872. Whilst fertile, their land was subjected to flooding from the Shoalhaven River and they moved to Tomerong after the 1870 flood. They purchased Portions 103 and 156, totalling 160 acres. In 1872 Robert fell ill with dropsy (oedema) and travelled to Wollongong by steamer. He passed away within a week, aged 41, leaving 34 year old Ellen with six children aged between 2 and 13. [1]
