Sidney Walter Borrowdale 1890-1918

Sidney Walter Borrowdale (1890-1918) was born at Numbaa near Nowra in 1890 to Robert Borrowdale, who had been born in Cumberland, England, and Catherine Caffery, from the Shoalhaven. When Sidney was 14 he performed a recitation at the Tomerong School Concert. Other participants included children of the Pepper, Suffolk, Barham, Buckland, Watt, Turner, Nelson and Ganderton families. Sidney's sister, Mary, married local Reuben James McGUIRE in 1909 (Their son, Sidney Borrowdale McGuire, was named after his Uncle. He would become a prominent cricketer for Tomerong and was killed in action in WWII). Another sister, Isabella Borrowdale, married William Andrews from Tomerong in 1897. On 11 Sep 1918 the Shoalhaven Telegraph reported; "Terrible Fatality at Tomerong - A terrible accident occurred at Tomerong early on Monday morning resulting in the death of a young man named Sidney William Borrowdale, a timber cutter, aged 28 years. The deceased was employed by Messrs. P McGuire and sons, sawmillers, Tomerong and about 8 o'clock on Monday morning he fell a tree in the bush for milling purposes. In falling, a branch of the tree struck a stout sapling, which it bent down till it broke. The sapling, thus released, rebounded, and struck Borrowdale, who was standing behind it, a terrific blow on the head, dashing his brains out, and killing him instantly. Constable Hinds was at once apprised of the sad fatality, and he was promptly on the scene, and arranged for the removal of the body to the deceased’s lodgings, at his sisters. An inquiry was held into the sad event yesterday by the coroner, Mr Reuben King, the finding being accidental death. Deceased, who had the reputation of being an expert axeman and a decent young fellow, was a son of Mrs Borrowdale, of Fitzgerald’s Lane, Nowra and the late Robert Borrowdale. Quite a gloom was cast over Tomerong by the news of the terrible fatality, the unfortunate victim, being well known and universally esteemed." The Coroner's Inquest held on 10 Sep 1918 stated that 28 year old Sidney had died from "injuries accidentally received through being struck by a falling tree" near Tomerong. Sidney is buried in the Presbyterian Portion of Nowra General Cemetery. [1]
