Introduction

Tomerong Past Wiki is a website/database that can be developed collaboratively by its users. It provides a different method of viewing and recording our history. This is a trial of Mediawiki for Tomerong History information. It is still under development. Its use and misuse will determine its future.

The site is divided into three sections accessible from the links below;

People - this is a list of people who have a connection to the village that is linked to their individual biographies,

Topics - a list of topics, institutions, businesses and locations in and around Tomerong linked to its historical narrative, and

Events - a list linked to narratives on some of the milestone events in the village's history.

Not sure where to start? The menu on the left (if on a PC) or accessed via the 'hamburger' (if on a mobile device- the menu icon at the top left) has a 'Random Page' selection. Click on this for random browsing.

Anyone can view the pages. To add or edit pages see further down this page. If you use the information on these pages elsewhere please provide acknowledgement and/or links. Blue text indicates a valid link to another page, whilst red text indicates that page has not been created yet.

Adding and Editing

To add or edit pages you will need to create an account and Log In (top right). This is to reduce spam and inappropriate edits. Anonymous users can read but not edit pages. You may wish to comment on 'your' page on what your connection or interest is to Tomerong; e.g Bryce Family or Timber Industry. Once logged in you will be able to edit and create pages. If you have difficulties then contact us at Tomerong Past.

I haven't developed a functional template for the addition of new pages but I have added an Institutions Template and a People Template at the bottom of their respective list of pages. To create a new page then copy the text, via the 'edit' tab, from these templates. More detail is provided in the People Template. If still unsure you can email us the information or refer to Help Mediawiki Help.

Most pages have a discussion tab so that users can discuss improvements to the content of the page.

Some pages are protected and can't be modified by a User. These pages include this page (the Main Page), the Tomerong Past Wiki:Privacy policy, Tomerong Past Wiki:About and Tomerong Past Wiki:General disclaimer. The People, Institutions and Events pages should all be modifiable by a logged in User. If you have difficulty then contact us at Tomerong Past.

References

In many cases the references related to the text are detailed in a primary source document such as the Tomerong Local History From Bullocks to Bypass or other documents such as Tomerong Anzacs and so on. Many of the these documents are available for viewing or download from the More Information page on the Tomerong Local History Website. This page also links to a Contemporary Map which will often show the location of institutions or family farms. If you require more detail on the reference, or lack of, then comment on the Discussion tab for that page and we may be able to provide further details.

So what's with this TPxxxx number?

A local history is built on snippets of information from many different sources. These could be newspapers, books, government archives and records, interviews with locals, published documents, photographs, audio recordings, minutes of local organisations and other sources. We have recorded the source/s of almost everything we have researched since 1995 and the link to the source is via the TP (Tomerong Past) database number where the information is stored. The unique number for each entry may also appear on the photograph or in the file name. An example of how the TP number is used is at tomeronghistory.com under the title So what's with this TPxxxx number?.
