Tomerong Past Wiki:About
The research for the book on Tomerong's local history (From Bullocks to Bypass) and the subsequent research conducted for later digital booklets, plus the Tomerong Past Facebook site created an immense amount of data and stories on Tomerong's history. Where possible this data has been woven into stories and posted on our various sites. I tried about 2019 to create a site, similar to Wikipedia, where this information could be created, posted, linked and, more importantly, where others could amend or add to the information. I failed. However, the generation of a new website in early 2024 with the technical help of my son, spurred me to try again (thank you Dan!). The selection of a new hosting provider also enabled the software to make this possible.
Unlike many static web pages or facebook sites 'MediaWiki' enables you to more easily link information that is text based rather than predominantly image based (facebook). This can be much more useful to those researching their family or local history and also enables them to contribute. Whilst we have amassed a large amount of data, it is nothing compared to the collective minds of the Tomerong ancestors, descendants and so on, who hold memories that are not recorded elsewhere. Sometimes we realise how little we know when we talk to the 'old-timers'. Sadly many of these are no longer with us and we are taking their place.
We have toyed with the idea of providing more extensive genealogical information on these sites but have never had the complete confidence in our data to do so. We have no familial connection with the previous residents of the village so any genealogical research we have undertaken is almost solely focussed on the village inhabitants and not one distinct family line. We leave this to others. Whilst we have an extensive 'Legacy' database of family connections we have chosen to link the People of Tomerong pages to the free genealogical website Wikitree. We would like to extend our appreciation to those who have posted this information on Wikitree. Particularly 'KC' who manages many of the Tomerong people.
Tomerong is, and always has been, a small community. That's why we love it. Whilst we don't expect many to contribute to this Wiki, we have enjoyed the process of designing and researching its content, and hope it is of use to those who have a connection to the village. Don't be scared of contributing your knowledge to this Wiki. If others hadn't done this for us, then the history may never have been recorded. It is beyond our ability and time to complete this Wiki and so any help would be appreciated. If you would like to contribute but don't feel you have the skills then post your information on the 'Discussion' page (see the top menu tab on each page) or email us with your entry, references and/or comments to Tomerong Past. We would also like to see more biographical information on more recent past residents. It would be better for their immediate descendants to write their grand/parents biographies rather than us. We cannot guarantee we will be able to continue writing Wikis and posting articles, images and conducting research for the various sites but have been grateful to receive many expressions of gratitude for the information provided so far.
We ask that if you use the information provided (on any of the sites) then you provide acknowledgement or a link to the source. It is disappointing sometimes to see many months of research copied, pasted, cropped and/or photo-edited with no reference, source, acknowledgement or link to the original writer; therefore, implying by omission that they are the researcher and writer. This is true of both human and Artificial Intelligence information that has been posted or mirrored to other sites (welcome to the world of AI!). We even got blocked from one facebook page when providing a link to the original (our) source! This was after twelve months of just observing the plagiarism. No doubt it is still continuing. As Ned Kelly reportedly (didn't) say "Such is Life".[1] Explanation of our references is provided on the Tomerong Past Wiki Main Page.
If you have come to this page indirectly then more information on the village's history and it's research may be found at the Tomerong Local History Web Page- tomeronghistory.com
