William BARTON
William Barton was born in Drumkeeran, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland to James and Elizabeth Barton (nee Adams) in 1835. His sister Ellen BARTON was born three years later. William, at age 13, was admitted into the charitable school known as the Vaughan Charter School in Tubrid (sometimes Tubbrid), a Townland just to the west of Drumkeeran. The purpose of the school was to educate Fermanagh children, especially those on the Castlehasset Estate, in agriculture. William Barton arrived in the Colony, with sponsorship from Robert KELLS, aboard the 'Abyssinia' in 1859 listing his occupation as a 24 year old Farm Labourer from Fermanagh. Robert had married William's sister, Ellen, the previous year and they settled at Longreach on the Shoalhaven River. Robert Kells died in 1872 and, after the floods of 1860s and 70s the Kells and Barton families moved to Tomerong. William Barton, purchased 84 acres of land south of Tomerong on Portion 35 in 1887. Portion 35 is now on Kells Road to the west of where the sawmills were established, whilst Portions 103 and 156, that had been conditionally purchased by Robert, were almost adjacent. It is not believed that William ever married. He died in 1913, aged 77, and is buried in Nowra Cemetery. [1]
