Cockrow and Erowal Farm
In 1829 Lt. John Lamb, retired, and family arrived in NSW. The same year he received a grant of 2560 acres on the northern shores of St. Georges Basin due to his past naval service and the document states 'to be called Erowal'. A house was built using convict labour and bricks made from the site. The grant was confirmed in 1837. However, Lamb remained in Sydney and leased the property first to John Campbell in 1838. The Wool Road was developed between the Monaro and South Huskisson and would pass through the property but its popularity lasted from 1841 to about 1848.
Brothers Alexander BRYCE II and William BRYCE I emigrated from Scotland with their wives Isabella WATT and Mary STARK, arriving in the early 1850s. They stayed with an Uncle, John Russell, on the Croom Estate between Albion Park and Dunmore, before purchasing Erowal in late 1854.
They subdivided the property with the eastern portion occupied by Alexander and family, still named Erowal, and the western portion occupied by William and family named Cockrow (or Cock-Crow). The creek that runs through the properties was known as Cock Crow Creek but later became Tomerong Creek. Formal subdivision occurred in 1886. Erowal Farm comprised just over 1084 acres and Cockrow Farm was 1063 acres. 426 acres to the north of Cockrow was sold to Malcolm MATHIE I, the Bryces' brother-in-law who had married Ann BRYCE and lived nearby at Tippet Hill.
The properties have had many owners and subdivisions including Percival Keen, Albert Wolk, Hookers Ltd., Wilmore and Randall, and Timms. [1]
